About the PNAS Member Editor
Name Vitousek, Peter
Location Stanford University
Primary Field Environmental Sciences and Ecology
Secondary Field Evolutionary Biology
 Election Citation
Vitousek has contributed substantially to the development of ecosystem ecology through theory, experiment, and synthesis and has pioneered a union of ecosystem and population perspectives. He demonstrated that invading species can alter entire ecosystem, that tropical deforestation can substantially increase atmospheric N2O, and uncovered the mechanism of both.
 Research Interests
My research interests are terrestrial ecosystems: structure, function, and regulation; biological invasions and ecosystem consequences; the global nitrogen cycle; and the ecology of Pacific islands, especially Hawaii.
