Brownlee pioneered in the identification, collection, and analysis of extraterrestrial particles in the Earth's stratosphere. Alone, and in collaboration with others, he has developed ingenious techniques for investigation of the composition and structure of the particles. An important new tool for studying solar system development has resulted.
