Bonini discovered fundamental genetic pathways controlling cell survival and differentiation during development, in pioneering work on the Drosophila eye. She created the first Drosophila model of a human neurodegenerative disease, bringing the power of genetics in model organisms to bear on complex biomedical problems and revolutionizing the entire field.
