About the PNAS Member Editor
Name Alivisatos, A. Paul
Location The University of Chicago
Primary Field Chemistry
Secondary Field Physics
 Election Citation
Alivisatos is a chemist who has pioneered the development of semiconductor nanocrystals. He elucidated their structural, thermodynamic, optical, and electrical characteristics. He also developed synthetic procedures to achieve size control, and demonstrated some of the first practical applications of these new materials.
 Research Interests
Paul Alivisatos studies inorganic nanocrystals. He developed methods to control their sizes and shapes. He has investigated structural and chemical transformations of nanocrystals, and he has studied their size dependent optical, electrical and thermodynamic properties. He has demonstrated applications of nanocrystals in biological imaging and renewable energy technologies.
