About the PNAS Member Editor
Name Borcherds, Richard E.
Location University of California, Berkeley
Primary Field Mathematics
 Election Citation
Borcherds is founder of the theory of vertex algebras - with deep ramifications in representation theory, number theory, algebraic geometry, topology, and QFT - and Fields Medal recipient for the magnificent proof of the Moonshine conjecture: Thompson series of any element in the Monster group is a modular function of genus 0.
 Research Interests
Richard Borcherds's research interests include the "monstrous moonshine" conjectures relating sporadic simple groups and modular functions, and the connections with vertex algebras, hyperbolic reflection groups, and Kac-Moody algebras. He has also worked on automorphic forms that can be written as infinite products.
