About the PNAS Member Editor
Name Denk, Winfried
Location Max Planck Institute for Biological Intelligence
Primary Field Systems Neuroscience
Secondary Field Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience
 Election Citation
Denk is a leader in the development of microscopy/imaging methods. He is known for the co-invention of multi-photon microscopy and for pioneering its application in neuroscience. He is also known for co-founding the field of cellular connectomics where he pioneered a new 3 dimensional electron-microscopy method and novel analysis techniques.
 Research Interests
Winfried Denk main interest is the development of imaging methods useful in neuroscience. He has also studied the direction selectivity circuitry in the mammalian retina using the 2-photon microscope an, more recently the serial block-face electron microscope. Currently he is trying to reconstruct the complete cellular connectome of an entire mouse brain.
