Allen is the most influential Australian archaeologist of his generation. He established the Pleistocene antiquity of oceanic voyaging in Island Melanesia, developed an unusually comprehensive record of early human ecology in Tasmania, documented the development of coastal trading in Papua, and pioneered historical archaeology in Australia and Island Melanesia.
