Beam has revealed a fundamentally new type of signaling in which two dissimilar ion channels belonging to separate membrane systems reciprocally regulate one another via "bi-directional signaling." He has systematically defined the molecular and structural basis for this bi-directional interaction, solving the mechanism for excitation contraction coupling in skeletal muscle. |
