Piperno pioneered in the discovery of the origins of tropical agriculture, showing that the humid tropics were crucial centers of early, independent plant domestication. She developed and refined methods and concepts in phytolith, starch grain, and pollen analysis and applied them to study plant evolution and environmental history in the Neotropics and Asia.
