About the PNAS Member Editor
Name Burchfiel, B. Clark
Location Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Primary Field Geology
 Election Citation
Burchfiel is a superb field geologist and tectonic synthesizer who has made major contributions to the understanding of mountain-building processes on the continents. His worldwide studies, incorporationg results from geophysics and geochemistry, have led to compelling new insights into the processes by which continents change and grow--perhaps the most exciting new extension of the plate-tectonics concept.
 Research Interests
I am interested in the processes of mountain building and the evolution of the continental crust; the processes of rifting and extension of the lithosphere; and the processes of intracontinental deformation related to plate interaction.
