Schellnhuber, through his theoretical work, has literally reshaped the core questions surrounding the field of modern earth systems science. He has done path-breaking work on the qualitative analysis of complex degradation syndromes in coupled nature-society systems, and pioneered the application of inverse computational approaches to the analysis of tolerable windows for global environmental change.
