About the PNAS Member Editor
Name Raichle, Marcus E.
Location Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis
Primary Field Systems Neuroscience
 Election Citation
Raichle pioneered in the study of functional activity throughout the human brain during normal cognitive function and in neuropsychiatric disease. This was made possible by his development of a technique for the rapid serial measurement of regional blood flow in the human brain utilizing short-lived tracers and positron emission tomography.
 Research Interests
I acquired my research interest in brain circulation and metabolism as a neurology resident. I gained experience as a full-time researcher as part of my training. This research interest continued during my time in the USAF. I went to Washington University intrigued by the potential of cyclotron-produced radionuclides in biology and medicine and was fortunate to land in a laboratory that developed the first positron emission tomograph or PET device. My role to explore its use in examining the brain in health and disease. This has kept at the table in the development of imaging, both PET and MRI, which has become a major force in neuroscience both in the laboratory and at the bedside.
