Bercaw's major discoveries in organometallic chemistry include the first N2 complex capable of 'fixing' or reducing the complexed nitrogen, the first insertion reaction involving complexed CO and hydride, some of the first stable hydrido (alkyl) complexes, the first well-established example of metal carbene-hydride migratory insertion, and the first reaction between two complexed CO molecules.
 Research Interests
Synthetic, mechanistic, structural organometallic chemistry; catalytic reactions of olefins; hydrocarbon oxidative conversion to higher alkanes, alcohols.
