Prof. Berman’s research on pathogenic yeasts, especially Candida albicans and Candida glabrata, seeks to understand basic processes, including drug tolerance, whereby pathogens grow in drugs despite their general drug-susceptibility. Her lab studies the mechanisms that underlie stress responses by exploring molecular and metabolic changes that alter the growth of subpopulations of cells that exhibit resilience to drug exposure. They also study dynamics of chromosomal structures, including centromeres, telomeres, origins of replication, and repeated DNA regions, and their contributions to genome stability and stress resiliance. Berman and colleagues have developed and adapted many widely used resources for the community of Candida researchers, including epitope and fluorescent protein tags and tools for analyzing and visualizing the genome structure of individual isolates. Understanding pathogen resiliance, and the chromosomal changes that sometimes drive it, may point the way to new therapeutic treatments for fungal infections. |
