Ashcroft has been a pioneer in developing and applying theories of both the solid and the liquid state to achieve a quantitative understanding of the phase diagrams of metals, insulators, and plasmas, in both the quantum and the classical regimes, and in advancing our theoretical understanding of materials under ultra-high pressures.
 Research Interests
My area of greatest research interest is in theoretical condensed matter physics including: theory of charged many-particle systems; theory of dense classical fluids; density-functional theory for classical and quantal systems with applications to phase transitions; electronic structure of ordered and disordered systems; band theory and applications to novel materials; and dense proton-electron and deuteron-electron systems with application to metallic states of hydrogen.
