Daubechies' deep and beautiful analysis of wavelets and their applications is a permanent contribution not only to mathematics, but to science and engineering more broadly. She has brought important insights from pure mathematics to such applied fields as signal analysis, signal compression, and computer graphics. |

My research interests focus on the mathematical aspects of time-frequency analysis, in particular, wavelets as well as applications to signal analysis, signal compression, and computer graphics. Many of the techniques developed in the past 60 years or so in harmonic analysis correspond to ""carving up"" functions and operators according to localization and scale. Several of these tools turn out to have analogs in signal analysis and in computer-aided design, with the result that insights from pure mathematics can be applied to very applied fields, as well as vice versa. The construction of wavelet bases is one example of this, but there are many others. The interface between these worlds provides many interesting (as well as difficult) problems and a rich field for research. |
