Altman's discovery of specific enzymatic catalysis by a unique molecule of RNA radically expanded our concept of enzymes beyond proteins only, and it opened the way for more extensive understanding of cellular mechanisms.
 Research Interests
My primary research areas are the biosynthesis of tRNA, the structure and function of ribonuclease P, catalytic RNA, active site analysis and substrate recognition requirements of the RNA subunit of RNase P, the role of RNase P in vivo, and gene therapy.
